My friend showed me a few songs he recorded with his new band the other day and it is blog-worthy to say the least. I just had to do a really brief mention so I could show you how great they are. The Thieves are based out of Los Angeles and they are worth checking out.

Interview: Greg Selkoe of Karmaloop
Greg Selkoe is the founder of the streetwear store and website Karmaloop, which is known for its selection of urban style streetwear, although it is more my brothers style than my own, every time I go in I manage to find something I want, not to mention the incredible sneaker selection. I also really like Karmaloop because of the Kazbah section, an area where they sell more undiscovered underground brands. Here's what Greg had to say:
Young and Bonafied: When and why did you decide to create Karmaloop?
Greg Selkoe: I was helping my boy Al with his music magazine called Decontrol...long gone but Al became our web designer for many years after that up until he moved to London last year...anyway me and this other dude were trying to sell ads to clothing brands...and we realized that a bunch of these clothing brands that people were sweating were not available many places...so we figured the Internet... that thing is everywhere we can offer people all over the world access to hard to find brands that was the genesis.
YAB: How did you come up with the name Karmaloop?
GS: I called it Karmaloop because I had no money and no idea what the site was going to look like or be named..a friend of mine based the initial design off the Buddhist symbol for Karma which looks like a looping motion so we thought hey Karmaloop that sounds like a good name and I guess we were right.
YAB: What made you decide to start the now popular Kazbah section for more undiscovered brands?
GS: We had been getting pitched weekly by dozens of brands that wanted to be on the site...many where very small brand but really amazing...it was to expensive to place orders and warehouse them with them being so small..but Karmaloop has always been about underground style and fashion and you can't get any closer to the ground than the Kazbah brands. So we set up Kazbah where brands applied...only like 3% get chosen..those that are chosen get to set up their own page and they do their own fulfillment and customer service...it has worked out very well!
YAB:Karmaloop has a big streetwear focus, how has streetwear changed since you first began in '99?
GS: Fashion always changes, when we first launched the site...it had a big electronic music and space odyssey 2001 influence, then it became an organic, earth tone work wear influence, then ultra-preppy redux and classic hip-hop, then Tokyo streetwear, now it is morphing into a little cleaner contemporary street, with a higher end fashion influence and 90's influence is going strong.
YAB: What is your most prized piece of attire?
GS:My soul...other than that it changes weekly.
YAB:Who or what inspires your style?
GS: Kanye, Pharell, JFK, Morrissey, 90's Hip Hop, Tom Ford, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and London Street Style...Sponge Bob and Patrick.
YAB: That items are you hoping to purchase soon?
GS: I get my clothing for free so I am good there...my new apartment!
YAB: How would you sum up your style?
GS: Its a simple casual, street look with some higher end touches.. always clean...I like to throw in a nice watch with t-shirt and Jeans just to mix it up, always different sneakers...I am very paired down in general though..if I had to sum it up in one word: scumpliflyicousinterogish

American Boy
I left July 7th to visit the amazing country of France and returned the other night on July 19th, the twelve days I spent were beyond incredible. I met and saw fantastic people, saw beautiful things, got a nice tan in Nice, and had the experience of a lifetime. First I saw Paris, where I visited all the sites, afterwards I saw Versailles, and finished my time in Nice on the beach.

Menswear Spring 2010
Menswear tends to disappoint me for many reasons. The collections tend to cater to men who won't spend money and the clothes they are selling, they tend to be to formal, they tend to always be designed for the wrong seasons, a lot of men, including myself, don't want to see another man in underwear on the runway when were looking at the collections, and most collections just lack in all aspects. The collections this season, like most menswear seasons, included a lot of looks that could be easily re-created for cheap. The obvious trends are monotone outfits, blues and oranges, nudes, bow ties, and oxford shoes. I salvaged through the garbage and chose my favorites for this latest season.
I didn't hate:
Calvin Klein:

He managed to use similar themes in one of my least favorite resort wear collections, and one of my most favorite menswear collections, which shows gender difference can define a theme. This collection managed to play with all of the things I like to see in menswear, color, pale tones, proper season, etc. There is a large amount of items I want in this collection. He made sheer clothing wearable for men and nude toned suits that I think I might have to get.
Alexander Mcqueen:

The majority of this collection, like Etro, could be recreated for much cheaper then Alexander's items cost. I loved the composition and it definitely gives inspiration, but almost all of it looks like either basics, D.I.Y., or vintage. I really enjoyed the creativity and suggestive finger painting, I really want to D.I.Y. that myself. One thing though that can't be copied are his unique prints and patterns that he uses.
Jean Paul Gaultier:

This goes with my general theme of not fully hating menswear. When you get passed all the fluff and ridiculous stuff that even the most fashion forward gentleman wouldn't think of wearing (Tube tops? C'mon Jean), there are solid items and themes in this collection. I liked the addition of color and the imaginative lines along the pants and composition, however I would've put things together differently, the majority of looks didn't have the flow you like to see in collections.
Etro:

Surprisingly one of my most favorite. I loved the conflicting patterns and colors, and I secretly enjoy the way a lot of the looks could be recreated with cheaper items. The composition is what I love most, and usually Etro doesn't come to mind when I think of designers I even like, let alone love. Certain items even reminded me of Luella's Spring 2009 collection. I really feel like re-creating a look from this with a bit of my personal touch. Also I will ad, bow ties are just the best.
Louis Vuitton:

The brand has always been a favorite of mine, you really never know what to expect from Marc when it comes to Vuitton, he's done classic, ethnic, futuristic, whimsical, disheveled, and more for the collections, and the risk almost always pays off. This season I like the way he included a lot of double-breasted looks, and trench-coats with shorts.
Comme Des Garçons:

At first glance, everything in this collection looks attractive but unwearable, but after examination I thought about it, and maybe a quarter of the items showcased I would love to own, and the ones I wouldn't want to own I would want framed. Rei always creates art in her collections, and its not always wearable, but I would love to own one of the amazing jackets in this collection. The composition is very appealing and interesting and I love the additions of the late 70's punk mixed in with the school boy inspired clothes, and if you look closely I even see some 50's inspiration in the sweaters and vests.
Bottega Veneta:

Veneta knows how to cater to all styles. The muted colors weren't my favorite, but the items in seclusion would work. Easily the coolest thing in this collection is the mix of the letterman's jacket and ethnic scarf in the first look. I loved the clean lines and vast appeal.
Jil Sander:

Last but not least, this collection defines immaculate to me. Its hard to describe or review something so simple, but I liked most of it. I will be honest, I can't say I loved it, but I will admit I was very pleased to see a designer not trying to get in everyones face with neon. It was very clean and safe. I enjoyed it.
Overall these were pretty great for menswear, Visit Style for closer views of all the collections.

Putting On The Ritz
Ok I think I deserve a pat on the back for not failing math this year. The school year is finally over and its finally summer. Monday night I had my semi-formal, where everyone gets all snazzy for 3 hours to dance and take pictures. Some fun was had. Excuse my brievity, but I have festivities to part take in!

No Doubt In My Mind
Last night I attended the No Doubt concert with my close friend Anne King, who you shall cherish, you will be seeing much of her. She may even guestblog, if she has time for you mere mortals. The concert was pretty amazing. Paramore opened, I'm not a fan, so not much to say, that sort of disapointed me. But No Doubt made up for it. They were exactly where you would expect them to be in 7, or so, years. It was very appropriate. They had aged in terms of style, instead of the typical checkerboard and punk, it was modern, an all white setting and wardrobe with black additions. Gwen wore harem pants, cropped tank, boots, and a lime green bra, I was almost sad she wasn't sporting Gareth Pugh S/S 09. It would've worked.

Among other surprising designer inspirations I noticed, including Balmain, there was a definite presence of Stephen Sprouse, especially durring the background clip playing durring 'Bathwater', which makes sense considering Gwen idolizes Debbie Harry, who was close with Sprouse. I told Anne my idea about the circle of Gwen and Sprouse links, Gwen's clip for 'Bathwater' aswell as the 'Rock Steady' album cover were inspired by Stephen Sprouse, who's work inspired the new collection Marc Jacobs designed for Louis Vuitton, Marc also named a perfume after Daisy Lowe, Gwen's step-daughter. Me and my ideas? Yes. Also Daisy Lowe is friends with Lily Allen, who has an element of Ska in her music, Ska was invented by No Doubt and Sublime in the early 90's. This is just my train of thought, not some cracked-out conspiracy. Hooray for grunge revival.

Ironic that I wore my Sprouse scarf last night? Perhaps.

Murder She Wrote
Today it was really gross. TYPICAL NEW ENGLAND. Soon I have summer vacation, which will be great and full of stories and photos. My sister and I made brownies. We tried a fancier kind last week made by Barefoot Contessa, didn't compare to the likes of Betty Crocker. We are brownie aficionados.

I got this great vintage Oleg Cassini windbreaker, how I love tacky things.

I've always loved our family's grand piano.
